Things We Like About Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®
Limited time offer: Earn 60,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after you spend $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of opening your account. This is one of the largest bonus offers we've seen on a co-branded airline credit card in recent months.
Earn 2 AAdvantage® miles for each $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases, at gas stations and at restaurants. So this is definitely a good card to use when it comes time to pay for your ticket purchases (made directly with American Airlines) and to take along with you when you travel.
Earn a $125 American Airlines Flight Discount. After you spend $20,000 or more in purchases on your Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® during your cardmembership year and renew your card, you earn a $125 American Airlines Flight Discount. This Flight Discount is redeemable toward the initial ticket purchase of eligible American Airlines air travel. You can redeem online at aa.com, or by calling American Airlines Reservations. Keep in mind that the Flight Discount expires one year from date of issue of the certificate.
Get 25% savings on your eligible inflight purchases. You will enjoy 25% savings on headsets, food and beverages that you purchase with this card on flights that are operated by American Airlines. These savings will be in the form of statement credit, which will be appear in your statement 6-8 weeks after the transaction is posted to your account. That means you will still need to pay for the full purchases, but you get part of what you spend reimbursed with a statement credit. This is a really nice benefit, especially since there aren't limits to the total amount you can save. Some other cards offer similar statement credits for inflight expenses, but only up to a fixed amount every year, and you reach that limit fast if you fly a lot.
No cap on the miles you can earn. You can accumulate as many miles as you want, so if you use this card to make a lot of purchases, you can earn a lot of miles.
Your first eligible checked bag is free. When you purchase an American Airlines plane ticket with this card to a domestic destination, your first eligible checked bag is free of charge for you (the primary cardholder) and up to 4 people on your reservation. This benefit can save you a lot of money, especially when you travel with your family!
No Foreign Transaction Fees. Most credit cards charge you a 3% foreign transaction fee every time you use your card to pay in a foreign currency. If you travel outside of the U.S. on vacation those fees can cost you a lot of money. But this card has no foreign transaction fee, which is a great benefit if you travel abroad.
You can earn extra miles with AAdvantage eShopping℠. This online mall lets you earn miles when you shop at over 850 online stores through this portal. That means you can earn miles by using this portal to buy things that you would buy anyway.
Our Least Favorite Things About Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®
$99 annual fee (waived for the first 12 months). You pay no annual fee during the first year, but after the first year, you will have to pay a $99 annual fee. In our opinion, this annual fee is worth it if you travel often with American Airlines or US Airways, or travel with a few people in the same reservation, as you get one eligible free checked bag for up to 4 people!
